A paddleboarding adventure is a fantastic way to spend quality time with your dog while exploring the beautiful Rideau River. Instead of the same daily walk around the neighborhood, your dog gets to experience new sights, smells, and sounds while enjoying the outdoors with you. Many dogs quickly learn to love being on the water and look forward to their paddleboarding adventures.

First Time Paddleboarding With Your Dog?

Most dogs can learn to paddleboard successfully with a little patience and preparation. Here are a few tips to help make your first outing a success:

Start on Shore

Allow your dog to become familiar with the paddleboard before heading onto the water. Let them sniff it, step on it, and get comfortable standing or sitting on the board while it's on land.

Keep Your First Paddle Short

Choose a calm day and plan for a shorter outing. Staying close to shore allows your dog to build confidence without becoming overwhelmed.

Bring Treats and Positive Reinforcement

Reward your dog for calm behaviour on the board. Positive experiences help them associate paddleboarding with fun and relaxation.

Encourage a Stable Position

Most dogs are happiest sitting or lying down near the front of the board. Encourage them to stay in one spot to help keep the board balanced.

Consider a Dog Life Jacket

While many dogs are strong swimmers, a properly fitted canine life jacket adds an extra layer of safety and makes it easier to assist your dog if they end up in the water.
