Thinking about trying stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) for the first time? You’re in the right place — and we promise, it’s way more fun (and less intimidating) than it looks.

At Ottawa SUP, we’ve helped hundreds of first-timers get out on the water with confidence — and a big grin. Whether you're going solo, with friends, or trying it as a family, here’s what to expect from your first paddleboarding adventure.

1. You Don’t Need Experience

Zero experience? No problem. SUP is one of the most beginner-friendly water sports out there. If you can stand, you can SUP — and even if you can’t stand right away, kneeling or sitting is still a great time.

Our rentals include a quick intro on how to use your paddle, how to stand up, and how to stay safe.

2. The Board is Bigger Than You Think

Most people are surprised by how wide and stable the board feels. Ours are designed with beginners in mind, making balance easier and more forgiving.

👉 These aren’t wobbly little surfboards. Think: sturdy, comfy, and forgiving.

3. You’ll Probably Start Kneeling

Most first-timers begin paddling from their knees. It helps you get used to the board and the paddle, and it’s totally normal to stay in that position if you’re not ready to stand.

We’ can give you tips for when and how to stand — no pressure.

4. You Might Fall In — and That’s Okay

Falling is part of the fun! It usually happens with a splash and a laugh, and we promise, it’s no big deal. Ottawa waters are calm and safe in our recommended launch spots.

Hot tip: Wear clothes you don’t mind getting wet, and bring a towel for after.

5. You’ll Be Surprised by How Peaceful It Is

Once you find your balance and start moving, it’s almost meditative. The sounds of the water, the rhythm of your paddle, the views of nature, it’s a full-on vibe.

You don’t have to go far or fast. This is about slowing down and soaking it in.

6. Safety First — Always

We’ll provide everything you need: Lifejacket (PFD), Paddle, Board, Leash (to keep your board close if you fall),

Safety tips and a calm launch location recommendation

Try paddleboarding this summer and discover what all the hype is about. You don’t need to be athletic, experienced, or even brave — just open to trying something new.
